Hi ya,

I got a green stone which gives an OTL readings with SG of 4.66 FL inert and magnification
I see minute scattered gas bubbles no other inclusions or zoning etc and i dont see doubling too! also no orange peel effect and facets are moderately sharp not molded.. Polariscope reaction dark . specs I cant see any line on the 653 to determine zircon but I see some lines in the 520-530 region 2 or 3 lines.

I am confused with glass vs. zircon

I know in general for glass R.I. and SG does not match but I know there have been cases with high refractive index green glass gia reported sometime back, not sure how prevalant it is.

Is there any other test to confirm glass or zircon? does the 653 line always appear in zircons ? and does zircon contain gas bubbles? I dont think i've seen it before.

cheers!

Also Zircon will blink light / dark 4 times during a revolution on the polariscope since it's double refractive

If you are a student of gemologyl and still use the term OTL, I can assure you that your teacher knows nothing about teaching you practical gemology. :(

Can be YAG or glass (barium-zirconium glass, density 4.65, Ref : Gems & Gemology Winter 2009 p 307)

Thanks all for the input.

Should'nt YAG show yellowish or reddish Mod to Strong Florescence? or it doesnt necessary have to show FL?

Does anyone have any spectrum of green yag?

Thanks

It doesn't necessary show fluorescence

Here you can find a spectrum of green YAG

Thanx marc for the info. its quite useful. I also requested my colleague if he can get a FTIR graph for this particular stone will upload it when I get it from him. Its an interesting case really...

cheers!

I would also guess YAG based on that SG and gas bubble arrays. Not many possibilities if that info is correct. Best regards, Lee

i'd like to see a Raman spectrum instead of FTIR one............your friend's software seems the OMNIC provided by Thermo, likely the FTIR unit is a nicolet 6700 or similar................maybe your friend has access to a Raman setup................

ciao
