I recently obtained my first DSLR (a Canon Rebel T3i) and I'd like to use it to take some clear shots of my gemstone creations.
Right now I just have the kit lense and I'd like to make my first investment be for a decent Macro lense that works well and won't break the bank.
So far I've read a lot of good things about the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 but I've not seen any pics taken with it for gemstone photography.
Will this lense work well or is there any other selections that may work better and still be sub $800?

Hi T,
While I may not be an expert on Macro lenses, the list suggested in the link should put you on the way to making a decision

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_PRICE_2|0&ci=274&N=4288584247+4108103567+4109120021&srtclk=sort
Not all will agree this is the right place to acquire proper lenses, but I have been successful with them. I also like Abe's of Maine as a source. Both outfits offer a vast amount of info to assist with your decision. If you stick with Sigma, Tamron or the Canon, you should have good results. Hope you find this useful.

You will find you are better off with a longer focal length lens. This will get you further back from the stone and improve the look of the stone.

Agree with Gene here. Could try the 105mm Sigma, 100mm Canon, 90mm Tamron. These would all be in the $500 to $800 range.

Thanks for the suggestions!
That website looks pretty good and I'll check out the lenses mentioned.

The webpage listed has most of the suspects. If you can stretch you budget to the $949 price the last lens on the page the MP E is very well thought of by members of my other favorite forum http://www.photomacrography.net It has been very thoroughly and scientifically tested and compared with other optics there and found to be almost as good as it gets. (I have not used this lens myself)

But for most purposes almost any lens on that page would do great if you develop the requisite macro skills and the accessories needed to make good shots.

Go to Wayne Emery's Little Camera website.
