I'm now the proud and very satisfied owner of a gorgeous 15.65 ct
Ethiopian opal, and if anyone would like to now finish this into two
pieces for me, please get in touch. I'm thinking maybe a pair of
earrings.

I also learned something new about gemstone photography today: Don't
let this happen - see photos. :-)

I called Jason Brim within minutes and we actually came to a very
quick solution - he's a great guy! He may be chiming in here.

Photos no longer available.

Wow! I had that thing for a few months and became friends with it- what a shame! What kind of lights are you using?

You can send it back to me, see if we can get two good stones out of it.

I now consider myself an expert Opal Photographer.

I think we'll see this piece reworked very soon - something very special in mind!

A new faceted opal came in.

Photo no longer available.

By eye the color of the central facet literally floats off the surface of the stone, fairly amazing. The color of the central large facet through the lens and by eye is much darker, closer to the darker violet that we see at the edges. The camera picks up the lighter color.

I believe the darker band of violet towards the bottom is the edge of the polish plane.

Great specimen to shoot!

Jeff

Is there any chance you could post a video of the faceted one? I'd like to see it in action :D

Sorry no video, unfortunately I'm not set up for that. There is another photo that is close to sequential though. This one does not show the color floating off the surface. I think that first photo must have been a perfect combination of lighting and shooting angles. By eye the lavender reflection views as darker violet.

Photo no longer available.

Regards!

Jeff

This is a great photo. Can you give me an idea of lighting type and camera settings.
