I am usually posting some pictures of gems that I have cut or talking about equipment, but I wanted to break out of my routine to mention that one of the GO contributors will be in an upcoming film.
Most folks here know Roger Dery as a master gemstone cutter who is more than generous with his knowledge. I know that I have certainly benefited from Roger's advice and patience. Roger also travels extensively in search of rough. Now these two things are coming together in a film titled "Sharing the Rough".
This film follows the gem process from the mines in Africa, to the gemcutter (Roger), and finally to the jeweler. Looks like a neat film that describes the whole cycle of what it takes to create jewelry.
I am not affiliated with the film in any way, but I have traveled with Roger and always seem to learn something when I am around him so I am excited to see this happening.

Hey Stevo and Jeff, Thanks for the mention, and hopefully we are to bring this project to fruition. Then all in the trade can benefit!
This is NOT going in the direction of the 'blood diamonds' theme. The concept here is to tell the story from the time it leaves the miners hands until it becomes a finished piece of jewelry. And it all begins in January....

Hi Roger,
The Mill Valley Film festival is going on right now. Any chance of Orin getting a showing? I'm sure he has the local connections - although it's obviously too late for this year.
Jeff
Hi Jeff, Thanks for thinking of this. Orin has compiled roughly 20 or so film festivals he would like to participate in next year - but as you know they will not all accept the request. We will have to wait and see where we end up.

The Sharing The Rough team has been receiving emails daily regarding the completion (and eventual screening) of the film. In addition to having a private screening for the trade press, industry bloggers and the various association board members, we will be showing a 90-minute version during the AGTA Seminar series. This will take place on Thursday February 5th at 1:00pm with a Q & A session following, should be done by 3:00pm.
This screening is open to the gem and jewelry trade, as well as the consumer. You will NOT need an AGTA badge to sit in on the presentation.

Yes, me too! I have watched bits and pieces of the final, but not in its entirety.
Speaking with the team, they are editing with 14-16 hour days to have the film ready for Tucson.

Our scheduled screening is on Friday evening, 7:00pm the 17th of April. I just watched this film at AGS Conclave and really enjoyed it. Anyone interested in gems should go see this documentary.
Thank you Nathan, much appreciated.
Last week we participated in the 48th annual WorldFest Houston film festival. There were 400 submissions in the documentary category (4,300 film in all categories), 150 were accepted for screening and review. Sharing The Rough took the Platinum Remi Award for a documentary (their highest award for the category).
This week the film was accepted and screened in the USA Festival in Dallas. Don't have results yet, but the cast and crew were one of 4 film teams interviewed on Good Morning Texas on Wednesday morning. They are on a roll!

Looks awesome! Any chance it'll end up on Netflix Canada?
Hi Robin, The whole purpose of the film participating in festivals around the country is recruit a buyer. It may be a film or production company, or a film studio, or to outlets like NetFlix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and others. Whoever the purchaser is, they will have exclusive control over the distribution channel.
Wednesday, the first night, is already sold out. But they opened a new screening opportunity for us on Thursday. The GIA Alumni Chapters in Southern California are joining forces to host a huge party on Thursday, the closing night of the festival. If anyone is in the area, you are welcome to participate and you do NOT have to be an Alum.

Following the Newport Beach festival, we have the Seattle festival which runs mid-May to early June. It is one of the largest festivals worldwide. Then, we've submitted to the San Francisco DocFest in mid June. Followed by the Traverse City MI in July, and Brooklyn festivals in September. And there are others farther out, but I don't have the info on those yet.
Hope it works out you can see it during one of the festivals.

....more info for those of you from southern California:
The Newport Beach Film Festival began last week, and actually runs through Wednesday April 29th - when http://sharingtherough screens on the closing night of the festival. Since this screening has sold out, the festival promoters opened another night for us on Thursday the 30th.
If you would like to see it on the big screen with Dolby Digital Surround Sound 5.1.... this is when you want to see it! In addition, 3 southern California GIA Alumni Chapters have joined together and are hosting a pre-screening party.
*All are welcome, and you do NOT have to be an Alumni member.
The film received great reviews at the AGS Conclave this week as it was screened for jewelry store owners. We are very pleased for Orin Mazzoni and the rest of the crew and cast.
