Hi,

Good day to you all. I want to learn Gem Cutting (so that i can evaluate rough). There is a course in Sri Lanka for Gem Cutting, Course duration is 4 Month, 5 days a week, 8 hr a day  Many Members in this forum told me that the time duration is too long.

So i approached a gem cutter and he agreed that he will teach me. i will be meeting him this week end.

I know that there are 8 basic cuts and i need to learn it.

Is there anything else that i need to learn from the Gem Cutter ?

Ooh my, welcome to our world, Hafiz.
Don't worry, it will all start to make sense when you get started.
Don't hurry, enjoy the journey.
8 basic cuts? I don't think so, rough gemstones dictate the cut they need, and there are many, many shapes.
Keep us all updated with your time with the gemcutter/tutor, and post photos of what you are doing.
I learned, whilst sitting under a shady tree, with a small Honda generator driving a very basic facetting plant.
During one lesson, the cutter bumped the dopped stone, a yellow sapphire, and we saw it fly off into the gravel around the tree.
We ended up sieving the driveway, before finally finding it again.
He ended my lessons, muttering darkly about too much talk!!
Barry.

Hi Hafiz,

Go to YouTube, and watch my "Faceting 101" YouTube series. This will show you how to cut gems. Then, go to the Gemology Project online, look at the faceting diagrams, and there is a basic curriculum of designs (Faceting 101, Lessons 1-8, with a final exam as well).

You can also find many resources online, like "Just Ask Jeff", or the forums here.
