Where are some of the places you get your rough? Do most generally deal in CT or Grams? Having a tough time locating good rough to facet! Any help appreciated!!!!!

Thanks
John

John, just exactly how much knowledge do you have?
Get real man, asking for diagrams, on a site that already has them featured as a part of the forum?
And where do we get our rough? Only about a million places!!
But on the positive side, I mine, and sell sapphire rough.
Let me know your budget, and I'll see if I can help.
You will need to spend $US30-50/ct, for blues or parti colours, $90/ct if you want yellows.

Barry

To be honest less than a year on cutting / faceting!!! Sorry I missed the link for diagrams last night when i registered for the message board! However I have seen that page before. Was curious about the post on cutting small stones. To quote "For 3 to 5 mm sizes I cut 9 main rounds with Vansant spikes". Didnt see a diagram for that. Im assumeing that that is a verriation of a SRB??? Sorry Just learning here! Not accustomed to the Lingo quite yet! As far as faceting rough, I should have been more spacific! Looking for inexpensive rough to learn on!!! (QUARTZ / GARNETS) And where would some good places be to aquire such material at! I guess i assumed again that long term members might know a good place to point a rookie in need to!!! Somewhere where one wont get Taken for there money and end up with something worthless!!! I do hope this is not how you treat new members? Felt like i was catching flames for asking a question.
On the bright side your help is appreciated!!!!

Thanks
John

Hey John,

I like Jeff Graham's book 'Money Cuts' for small stones, they tend to be easy to cut with a small number of facets.

The rough question gets asked a lot on here, I would try searching the forums to see what pops up.

You'll get more responses on these types of questions in the 'Lapidary Corner' section of the forums, this area is more focused towards beginners to gemology in general.

Welcome!

Bob

Well, I just learned my new thing for the day. I had always thought that the yellows were lowered valued than blue sapphires. Thanks for the update to my knowledge Barry.

Hey Michael, I speak only for the Qld stuff, but yellows are soaring in value.
They are quite rare, and are now out-pacing the blues.
For every 100cts of quality stone, maybe, just maybe, 2-5% are yellows.
I get requests for yellow rough, that I simply can't fulfill.
In 5 years of mining, we have only found 3 or 4, +5ct pure yellows.
One must be heated, as it has a big cloud of golden silk, outlining the growth lines.
I will attempt to photo it for you, when I'm off next week.
Barry.

Yup, plenty of blue sapphires out in Queensland, but it's those saturated yellows that nobody ever seems to have, and nobody ever seems to find. Barry has yet to find me a yellow zircon though - those are even rarer :D
