Hi,

I am planning to travel to India to buy Tourmalines (light Green and pink) and Aquamarine. These will be sold to the local jewelry trade which will be used for jewelry.

Apart form the Gemstone should be clean (without inclusions) and should not have a huge bottom, what else should be considered before purchase. any advise would be highly appreciated.

Two quick things on tourmaline:
Avoid stones that are too long and narrow--typical for high weight retention in tourmaline but hard to sell.
Bicolors are best liked with a nice 50/50 split in color rather than a bit of a second color on one end.

Also remember that pale blue aquamarine is super super common. It's not worthless, but the more saturation you can get the better!

On your tourmaline, be sure to buy open "C" stones. a small inclusion is not a bad thing, helps with identification. Aqua is all about the color! as blue as possible! the lighter stuff is so common and inexpensive. expect good Aqua to be more costly.

Have you already made your trip Hafiz? I know some people in Jaipur (I sell rough to them), in case you need references.

Hi Miguel,

If you have the type of stones you are looking for in mind, I can try and find references.

Word of advice: Be careful. There are a lot of middlemen in Jaipur. If you manage to reach the direct dealer, you can get good deals, otherwise middlemen also add their margins...since I am based in Delhi, I have faced these challenges as well.

If you've not been to Jaipur before, it can be a confusing experience. The primary market you should plan to visit is "Johri Bazaar". It is a maze of small lanes any by lanes...then, there is an export oriented area that the government has now developed. It is in an area called "Sita Pura".

All these points apart, once you reach the right dealers, you can get good deals.

All the best and let me know if I can be of any help.

Regards,

Atul
