I'm an 18 year old fresh out of high school and headed to university to study law in a month and my interest in rare gems has lead me to this forum. I'm very interested in pursuing a career as a gem dealer (because the thought of an office job is really depressing)
There's so much I don't know that I would really appreciate your assistance
Firstly, I would like to buy rough stones and sell them cut and polished (i.e the most expensive emeralds and sapphires that will likely have the highest profit margins)
How much cash will I need to embark on this mission of mine? I'm going to work as a lawyer for a while so money hopefully won't be an issue.
secondly ,how much money will I be making if I pursue this career? Is it enough to rival a lawyer's salary or will I be living my life knocking on the door of poverty? I want specifics here
any other pieces of advice would be really appreciated:)

whether or not dealing in gems brings you to poverty or riches is kinda how good you are, just like anything else. There are multi millionaire lawyers and lawyers struggling to find enough to pay the bills.Stick with the law path and dabble until you know the market the gems and your limit for risk.

Hey Tawanda, I will help you. I can sell you the "highest value" sapphire rough, then you can have it cut, and make ??? Do you want to start with a parcel for $20,000, or would you prefer a special for $50,000? When you are talking about high value sapphire rough, those prices may buy you, say 10 stones. Emeralds I cannot comment on, as I have very little experience with said gems. Your cutting fees are going to be substantial though, maybe another $2-3,000. So lets say all up, $55k for 10 special gems, all large, high quality sapphires, or Emeralds, or maybe even Ruby. Now, you're really in the big league, and you can try to find a buyer. Good luck!! Barry
