Hi there,

I bought some gemstones lot from scrap jewelleries and I tried to identify the green gems in the lot. Here's what I've done so far

- I look under 10x mag and can't seem to find any inclusion (bear in mind that I am really a beginner), dark green in colour

- under UV lamp used for detecting money, no flourescence detected

- under DIY polariscope, no 4 times blinking when rotated in 360 deg

At this stage, I can only think of green garnet (demantoid), and glass. Unfortunately, I haven't build my DIY sg kit yet, therefore I need advice on what should I do further to identify the green gem and whether any mistakes I've done?

I've taken some pictures of it but not sure how to put it here

Many thanks

Hi Alberto,
Thank you for the guidance on posting pictures.

Here are the pictures.. Not sure whether it is clear enough.. I noticed that pictures sometimes doesn't show the same thing like we saw with our own eyes

The gems I've seen at standard cash4gold types of places have been probably 95%+ fake. You can get lucky sometimes, and I have before, but that's very much a needle in the haystack. In this context, if it looks like glass it is probably glass. I hate to say it, but it really looks like glass.

yeah i think it is glass also since it showed SR signs under polariscope and almost no inclusion. I just couldn't decide whether it is green garnet or glass. This is good since I could use these stones as example of glass in future IDs. To be fair for the seller, he doesn't mentioned any type of gem.. just state he's selling 100 stones of mix lot acquired from salvaging scrap jewelleries.

Is there a way to differentiate between garnet and glass? I've read also regarding visual optics but not sure where can I find the reference about it in order to learn

The easiest way to identify glass in a jiffy is to touch it to your lip. Glass feels warm relative to a crystalline stone; its amorphous structure (or rather, lack of structure) means that it does not conduct heat very well. It will also have a lower density and refractive index than garnet.
