Hello everyone, Thx to the admin for activating my account. I'm absolute beginner in gemology. I picked up interest in gemology after I bought some gemstones for my wife. Seeing the gemstones only up close excites me and I want to learn more about it.
I came across this forum since I read that this forum consists of gemologist all around the world, so I would like your advice on where should I start learning/get resources(online or books) and what is the required basic tool that would help me learn it?

I good start would be a decent microscope, if your on a budget may i suggest a (Gemoro) Elite. its a good scope for under 350. I use this scope when i rockhound. this is a start, if you feel you want to get deeper then may i suggest a coarse in colored stones and gem identification from GIA. At this point you will want a few basics, polariscope and a refractomiter. I hope this help's you and gets you going! there is a wonderful microscopic world in gems all there own. May i also suggest a fine crystal opal sample, preferably with a heavily saturated pin-fire pattern. it's my favorite to look at under a scope. To me its like the heavens open up just for me and shine with a billion galaxy's all my own!

As Barbra says, study the side-bar menu, and you will find everything you need to become proficient at gem I.D, and develop a great understanding of the subject. The concept of paying for the same info seems really silly. Barry.

Thank you very much for the replies. I just started reading through the free online gemology course. It is very helpful and easy to understand. Gemoro microsope is a nice one & affordable. I have set my eyes on Gemoro microscope for future buying to replace my old simple microscope. In the mean time, I'll read more and look at gemstones I got (my wife's stone actually lol) to learn more.
