I am new to this forum and nearly new to gemmology , so bear with my lack of knowledge and English is not my native language btw.
I will start from beginning, recently I've bought on ebay ( I know...blind luck) few rough sapphires and spinels. After sending two of sapphires to cut and to gemmologist for confirmation, I've ended with certified color change sapphires. As those two was randomly chosen from larger batch and checked by gemmologist, this gives me fair percentage to be sure that they are genuine CC Sapphires mined in Tanzania (got original prove of purchase) and few spinels. Question is, are it's wise to get them faceted? They are mostly about 2ct rough crystals, changing colour from bluish/green to - purple/pink-red. As I'm inexperienced in gemstone trade and never before sell any.. except few on ebay, is there any market for them?
Hi Kobalt, good deal for you, but if you are getting cut stones of less than 1/2ct, very little market value for them, and you are probably better selling the rough to private gemcutters. Try the market-place on this forum, and see what response you get. Good luck, Barry
Thank you for advise Barry, I will put there few rough and see whats happen. Personally I prefer to get them cut, those 2 pieces i just get done they was 2.3ct and 2.5ct in nice round shape. one ended as round and another as octagon. Both above 1ct and medium dark. As far as I can see (.. or can't see ) they are lupe clean and very nice luster. I would love to post picture but my camera just wont pick up correct color.
This bring one more question, if I put them on sale how the he$% to do pictures of them?!
I've been trying for days and that includes my friend professional photographer - still cant get correct color everything I get is bluish or grayish.
Hi Kobalt, that's a good return from rough to cut stone. You must have a very skilled cutter to do that for you. Don't worry about getting the colour absolutely right, I'm sure a number of people on this forum will be interested in those stones. I would be interested in possibly buying some of the rough myself. Barry.
As soon as I'm gonna find some free time I will do few pictures and post them for sale. I just got another look on them and there is around 50 pieces of 1.3 ct to 1.9 that I'm willing to sell, will put them in batches of 10 so more peps can enjoy. On the other hand I still have this few spinels..same story as before, to be honest all this color change madness causing my chrysoberyls to look very suspicious, my brain must be playing tricks on me how much luck can one person have.
Here is my best... color change sapphire. they should be green... round is medium dark slyBluishGreen and square is green. Don't have pictures of rough for sale but it will give all idea about what color change ability we are talking.
I didn't ever put any pictures on forums... hope it will works.
Hi Kobalt, yes, those shots give an idea of the stones. Don't get too exited about high values though, they are probably not worth very much. They may colour shift, but they do not appear to be anything special, and the small sizes are not easy to sell. Barry.
As I am new in this... How much should I ask for parcel or rough color change sapphires? I do know that they are small in size and more like curiosity or accent stones. When I was browsing for color change sapphires I did found, that rough sapphires in similar size but 'regular' not color change are selling between 5-7$ per carat. How much should I ask? I do know that I'm not getting filthy rich:) but want to sell them for fair price. That is why I'm asking all this silly questions.
No Kobalt, not silly questions at all. That's the thing about this forum, people will help you if they can, and take pleasure when you succeed. Please post a shot of the rough, it will give me an idea of the parcel, and I can then post my opinion of it. Barry.
Thanks kobalt, but your photography is like mine- not very good. The small size, and poor colour showing in the change, says to me that $7-10/ct is about right. Colour change stones need to exhibit a really dramatic, clean shift, to make them worth much. Most of the people I know, would opt for a really clean piece of rough, with no colour change, but a really crisp colour. Try $10/ct for the whole parcel, and see if you get any takers. How many cts do you have for sale? Barry.

File comment: Here is a good example of a really crisp colour change.

Now I am jealous. I can't catch colour so clearly. In those two already cut, color shift is actually very clear, it goes from deep emerald green up to something like garnet red. What camera you use to catch this color shift? any special lenses?

Someone else can explain better, but it's more about the light you're using.
Oh, and for any stones that only shift about one position on a six-color wheel (e.g., red to purple, or blue to green), many call them "color shift" and not "color change". Just something to put in your pocket.
Kobalt, all I use is a cheap little Nikon Coolpix. The colour shift should show from daylight to artificial light. What you are describing is not a colour change I am familiar with, for sapphire. Where are the stones from? Barry.
All those stones are from Tanzania, got original receipt dated year 2000. they come together with color change spinels (I will ask about them later) and few chrysoberyles... not very sure about them and they colour change. : ( I don't know from which mine they are, currently cant afford to send then to laboratory. Here is gemmological report for round sapphire posted earlier.
