When used improperly, gem boxes with glass lids may damage the stones you're trying to protect. If you're unsure why, it's worth a couple minutes to read this:

Nice little write up, Peter. When I started taking my jewelry classes, every now and then someone wanted to see my stones. They're all in these types of boxes. It only took one moment of distraction for me to not notice someone trying to open up a case improperly and soon followed, "oops", and the awful sound of an opal bouncing across the floor. It ended well, the stone was fine by my amazement. But never do I let anyone open my boxes since then. If they want to see a piece, I open it and I return it to the box. And yes this has also been fueled by people putting a stone cutlet-up, sideways, etc., and jamming the lid back on. My advice to anyone newer in this arena is to read Peter's article and always be the one to perform the gem removal and return to the boxes. It'll save some headache.
Thanks for writing / demonstrating this Peter. It seems so simple, but SO many people DON'T know how to use these gem boxes. Another item that many don't use with caution are the gemstone holders. These can put too much pressure on a stone,...I've seen several stones chipped from using these things. I wish "customers" wouldn't use these to inspect a stone until AFTER their inspection period is over and they own the stone.
