Good day,

I am still reading on gemology. I now need more information between the chemistry and gem to understand more all physical aspects of gems.

Does someone know a book who explain that with clarity for a non-scientific person? Maybe a book who classifies gems by their cristalline structure with link to their chemical composant(elements)?

It seems to me that if I can understand more how the gem is made internally( ie which elements and how these elements bond together), it will be easier to understand the physical differences and to remember them.

My chemistry lessons are far behind me, but I wonder if the more the elements of a gem has bonds and how close they are, may explain a lot. So, a book classifying the gem by that way would help me a lot.

I was wondering about a book on mineralogy but it may be too difficult for my understanding.

Anybody has an idea?

Brigitte

My personal favorite is

Gems, Fifth Edition
This (actually an earlier edition) was my textbook at DGemG.

Much less pricey, (and not as comprehensive}

Gems and Crystals: From the American Museum of Natural History (Rocks, Minerals and Gemstones)

For the most current information on specific topics, I do a search on the Gems and Gemology Site, listed on the left.

Gemstones of the World, by Walter Schumann. What I have read is the "newly revised & expanded 4th ed."... There may be newer edition.

Enjoy :-)

Good day,

Does the book "Gem" of Michael O'Donoghue is a newer edition of Webster's book "Gem"? I know that sometimes happen when the original author is dead.

Good day,

Thank you for your answers.

We already have the Schumann's book. It is a traduction in french. I like it very. We gave it to our oldest son 2-3 years ago.

I looked in the internet for the Webster's book "Gem". In the used books, there is a huge difference in price based on the edition that you are looking for. For the third edition, I can have the book for around $40.00. The 4th edition is more around $125.00 et the fifth is around $250.00.

Can you explain the reasons for thoses big differences in prices?

Brigitte
