Hi all. I'm new to the site and looking for some advice regarding some education and career questions.
I'll start with a little background on myself. I worked in retail jewelry sales and management for nearly ten years before the company I worked for went out of business. I now work as an e-commerce supervisor for a large not for profit that sells donated to goods to fund our mission of training and placing people in jobs within our community. Using my experience in jewelry I sort all donated jewelry and sell it on our online auction site.
The first thing I want to do is become a gemologist. I only have the option of studying via distance education. I'm hoping to receive some financial assistance from my employer towards tuition. GIA is probably my first choice, but I'm afraid the cost my scare my employer. Even if my employer pays for most of my tuition, the cost of traveling and staying in New York for lab classes can still be quite substantial out of my pocket. What are some cheaper options for distance education?
I also want to become an appraiser so, are there certain schools that you have to go to to be recognized by the profession? -Removed by Admin-
After becoming a gemologist, (other than experience) what's the next step towards becoming an appraiser?
Can you appraise jewelry that you are selling? I understand the conflict of interest. It would be a great if I could grade and appraise our jewelry in house.
