Has anyone heard good things about the Canadian Institute of Gemmology? I'm interested in doing some correspondence courses through them but have been unable to find any reviews. I have no idea if they're even well recognized in the jewellery trade.

Yes.

Reviews are a form of advertizing. One should "follow the money" to evaluate whether a review is positive or negative.

Are you interested in learning gemology or learning how to sell jewellery?

There is no necessary correlation between the quality of an gemological education offered by an institution and how well it is recognized in the jewelery trade.

The important factors are (1) how smart you are and (2) what are the qualifications of one's instructors.

Gemmology is not difficult to learn, if you can read. You can get all the help you need from a few books and the free information from here at Gemology On Line.

There are a few of us who are not self starting genuises like Dr. Bill and realize that we can benefit from a little class work. There are a couple members here who are on the board of the Canadian school who will probably get back to you when they check in. I have taken classes from GIA and GemA and found both to be useful. My take on it is that GIA is more geared toward the retail industry and GemA is more geared toward the wholesale side of things. Don't know about CIG. Good luck in the industry.
