I'm new to the forum and a begginer in gemology/mineralogy. I'm starting a collection of stones - almost all of them colored gemstones - and I'm having some trouble on their ID. As I have no equipment, and some instruments would be useless on a tumbled stone (like a refractometer, I think), could someone indicate a method or reading material for me to improve on the matter? I don't need to distinguish real stones from fakes (most of the time), nor assess value.
Example: I have some green stones that are very similar. I just know they're not amazonite or agate. I've been searching for some indications of possible confusions and overall characteristics of minerals that could lead me to answers.
Thank you very much - and sorry if I have asked a question already answered on some other post (I haven't found any)...

Thanks. The S.G. actually solve many of the most common confusions.
What about the stones that belong in the same group, e.g., the different types of chalcedony like jasper, agate and chrysoprase, or some kinds of garnet? In these cases the S.G. can be insufficient to make a distincion. Any tips?
