Hello! I'm new here and this post is kind of in the wrong place, but I am interested in getting gemological instruction at a reasonable price.
I cannot currently afford the GIA.
Thanks.

Hello Antares,

If you aren't pursuing a diploma I suggest you visit the Gemology Project. Start at the top left and work your way down, using this board as a multi-person mentor. There is hundreds of rock lovers here who love sharing their knowledge and I can guarantee you that this combined effort is the most precious resource of rock-knowledge on this planet.

Thanks Tim!

I think The Gemology Project is pretty awesome after a quick skim! Do you have any suggestions on good textbooks or how to learn hands-on?

Welcome Antares!
May I suggest
The Handbook of Gemmology on DVD.
There are also several links on the left for free information.
We are happy to help you with any questions or confusions.

As someone who's also relatively new to gemology, I'm constantly referencing this message board, who better to get information from than the experts themselves. As far as books, "Gems" by O'Donohughe is really great in terms of the amount of information is presents. I like the edition w/ the red cover, forgot which number that is. If you're looking for some interesting articles 'ruby-sapphire.com' is great. Richard Hughes does a fantastic job covering some really interesting topics.

The FGA course textbook is available as a Kindle book. I have it on mine and use the reference frequently.

I suggest Gemologyonline.com forum...and by god you are already here!!!
You will find your best education right here. Any number of books will teach you, more or less, the same thing. it's the pro's who teach u what the books leave out...and they can be found right here. Kick back and take some time to read some of the threads. use the search engine up on the left side to assist you. I hear that member...his name is..um..."amethystguy" I think...he has the best post :^o
Like I said stay a minute and keep coming back...

Absolutely nothing against Gemologyonline ;) but I started my education on the International Gem Society's website. I am in the middle of my first GIA course. I plan on taking one at a time.

You also need to hold/feel/touch/taste/examine with a loupe, as much rough/cut gemstone as you can inhale!
Join a gemclub, go on excursions, sit with someone cutting a stone, take vacations to special gemstone shows, ie Tuscon.
Welcome to our special world!
