My almost 8-year-old daughter had gotten very into gemstones and also likes to collect rocks and minerals. She wants to ID these but it seems you need to have a bit of knowledge of gemology to post a picture here. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there are some good classes or exhibits in the Washington DC area, or clubs, etc.? I've looked online and so far haven't come up with anything. Any suggestions on where to get some quick pointers about the info that's needed here to post pictures of stuff for identification? Thanks!

Hi dvdmon. Try contacting the Gem, Lapidary and Mineral Society of D.C. Inc. Most Gem and Mineral Clubs have a Children's section. I guarantee their members will kindly help your daughter with IDs of her specimens. Perhaps the 2 of you can go on some of their field trips and collect new pieces. Hope this helps.

Hi, I live in the DC area myself and I've attended a couple of events sponsored by the Southern Maryland Rock and Mineral Club. They're a friendly and knowledgeable bunch and as you can see on the website they offer classes.
