Hey All,

Im a completely new to the world of gemology and am very excited to start learning just like many others on this forum.

In brief, i have just started practicing on a ruby that belongs to my mom.

Under the chelsea filter the ruby shows Pinkish red rather than red or bright red.

In some books i read that Red is for genuine ruby and synthetic rubies are much brighter red, but what if its pinkish red, clearly pinkish red.

I read else where that pinkish read may imply its a Thai Ruby.

Anyone had this with any ruby?

Your thoughts on this are much appreciated.

Thanks :D

A Chelsea Filter will not separate natural from synthetic ruby.

well,I'd have to say synthetic ruby popular in early/the middle of the 20th century.it might be synthetic when less inclusions can be seen in naked eye.

Synthetic flame fusion ruby was developed in the late 1800s.
Fine genuine rubies will not have inclusions visible to the unaided eye.
There are flux grown synthetics which will have inclusions visible without magnification.

One learns to separate natural vs synthetic corundum on the basis of microscopic observation. Occasionally, curved growth lines can be observed without magnification in synthetic rubies, but this is unusual.

You may wish to review Dr. Smigel's page on synthetics:

and perhaps, read through her course: :)

Hey all, thanks for the quick replies and useful info. However, the main question im asking got ignored,
I would like to know if it is possible for a ruby (natural or synthetic) to show a Pinkish Red reaction under the chelsea filter or it has to be only strictly red?

Thank you

Yes, it's possible but nothing can be inferred nor determined by that reaction. :)
