The little handheld spectroscope I have is just about useless. The field of view is narrow and any absorption lines are not discernable. I am contemplating the purchase of what I would hope to be more effective equipment; however, I do not want to spend a lot on something that turns out to be no better. Any suggestions?

What kind do you have now? Is it prism or diffraction grating? Can you focus it and adjust light? What happens when you view fluorescent overhead lights with your spectroscope? See some absorption bands then?
I am fond of the OPL teaching spectroscope with stand.
Thanks,Barbra, for your comments. My spectroscope is some no- name brand just two inches long, half inch diameter, three eighths inch aperture, diffraction grating, non-adjustable for focusing. Upon viewing a fluorescent light as you suggested, I observed a much brighter spectrum than with any gemstone, much narrower color bands, and three or four thin black vertical lines in the yellow to red area.
I have wondered about the OPL but have not been able to determine from pictures what its dimensions are nor whether the unit with stand is any larger than the hand-held one.
Thanks for your further reply with picture of OPL device. Is the second object to the right a small flashlight that is part of the kit, or is it a separate pocket scope?
