I have 14 Rubies that were removed from a gold necklace before scrapping. I used my diamond tester (cheap one) on these and it showed them at a 10. Largest is 1.5 carats and they graduate down in size. Have pictures but will need to upload to Photobucket to put on here.
My question is how can I get an apprasal value? Live in small town and jewelers in towns around here, know about as much about gems as I do. Can get pictures uploaded later if anyone is interested, but they are not great pics.
Pictures are always welcome but no one here can do an appraisal from some pics.
Where are you situated? You do need to find a gemmologist just to confirm that the stones are natural and not synthetic. If you think they are worth some bucks then get them examined properly and appraised by someone who knows their stuff.
You can always post them to someone, they don't have to live near you

Well, nothing can be determined from those pics.
If I may quote Frank, "You do need to find a gemmologist just to confirm that the stones are natural and not synthetic. If you think they are worth some bucks then get them examined properly and appraised by someone who knows their stuff. You can always post them to someone, they don't have to live near you"
Yes. Thanks. I'll have to find one that I know I can trust though. The few jewelers that I know from around here (Iowa) don't seem to know that much about Rubies. I've read the articles about how real rubies have some marks in them while man-made ones haveair bubbles, etc. Can see a little dark spot or two in these but no bubbles with a 10X loupe. Man-made ones are suppose to weigh less and from what I've read they are not as hard. But you ever know how true the things you read are. Thanks again.

Iowa jewelers sound similar to the ones I know in Ohio, LOL Synthetic Ruby does not weigh less than natural and they are identical in hardness, however, simulant Ruby likely will weigh less and will be softer. Some synthetics do have inclusions. The bubbles seen with a 10x loupe are in natural Rubies that have had voids filled with glass, not usually seen in synthetics. Best regards, Lee
Lee, Had to go check out your Etsy shop. Have to say, you do some really nice work. I had a shop on Bananza that did fairly well but had to give it up recently because of a health problem that takes up a lot of time. Don't seem to have the patience with the computer and picture taking either.

Thanks Jerry Lee! I enjoy my work. I used to surf the internet really hard to find free information on gemology and as it turns out, this site has a ton of good reading so if you want to learn more this is a good start. Also always feel free to ask questions as this site has a lot of knowledgeable members and I will help you when ever I can. And thanks Barbra, I will be loading even more into the Gemology Online Marketplace today! Best regards, Lee
