Barbra, this sounds like what Byom is on about.
Dzi (agate beads)from Tibet. Pronounced as zee but apparently other spellings are gZi, ghzi, zi, tzi

Are these what you are after?

Hi Byom Dzi bead. old agate beads often with eye patterns.
Much revered and valued by meny Tebetan people
Most Dzi beads are not old or authentic, there is much faking of these beads, The way to check is to view them under magnification for signs of wear and ageing. IF you are not knowledgeable on these bead its not likely you are going to get a old authentic Dzi bead

Only just seen the link mehoose as posted
Its no wonder people fake them at those prices

Hi there,
If your "zee stone" is the "Dzi bead" with 15 "eyes", are the "eyes" of equal sizes? If they do, and the bead is a natural Dzi with a perfect ellipsoidal shape without any cracks, this is rare and valuable indeed. The old Dzi with the highest number of "eyes" that I have ever seen had 9 eyes. One of the highly prized Dzi varieties is the Dzi with many "eyes" of equal sizes and even distribution across the ellipsoidal body. Anyway, beware of imitations

Dzi is a mysterious bead, believed to be originated from Tibet and its neighboring locations in Himalaya. This unique looking bead is treasured by many Buddhists, especially those following the Tibetan Buddhism. They keep and wear this as an amulet. They believe that these beads carry "energy" that can improve the "aura" of the owner......Dzi is popular not only in Tibet, but in other Oriental and Southeast Asian cities such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

According to some serious Dzi collectors here, the genuine Dzi beads belong to the "sedimentary rock type", with clay as the major constituting material of the Dzi beads. Nowadays, there are many "new Dzi beads" which are made up of agate, chalcedony, glass and even metals.

I am not a fan of this expensive bead, and never really learn in detailed how to identify the natural Dzi beads.... But a very good idea from davegibson: look for signs of wear. In general, only the old Dzi beads are considered as the natural ones.

Cheers!

WClee
