Hello Everyone,

I'm new here and I have some questions about RI fluid. Can someone tell me what the refractive index of RI fluid is and why, specifically was it made with that RI? I mean the 1.79 variety.

Also, Can someone tell me WHY there is a green line when looking at a stone in the refractometer? Also, Why is there "shading" above the greenish line and below the line any color or shading drops off?
I would GREATLY appreciate any help here.

Thanks! :D

There are several online gemology courses posted to the left. The answer to your question is quite involved and would take a very long time to write. However, I understand your desire to obtain the knowledge. The answers are readily available.

1. the limited RI of the fluid is a health thing. Any higher and you start killing brain cells when you sniff it.
2. green line? Is that with green rocks? Are you using a monochromatic light source or band-pass filter?

Regarding the "green line" question. A good explanation can be found in the book "Optical Mineralogy" by Paul Kerr. This is an old book and might be difficult to find, but worth the effort.

Thanks for the responses everyone.
I was wondering what the actual refractive index of the FLUID is. IS it 1.79? Also I guess what I meant by "the green line" is the greenish line you get while looking at the shaded part of the stone meeting the hemi cylinder.
Thanks again.

1.79 it is, should be on the label anyway, cannot help you with the green line though...
