Hello. First of all - i have information technology background, but not gemology. I have several jewelry suppliers for my store. Several weeks ago i read that almost all rubies in market are enhanced. I plan to buy some gem identification kit for beginners. And simple digital microscope. First of all i try to experiment with UV-lamp to see fluorescence of ruby. I think there are will be one color (red) emission of ligth. But i saw some blue color. Can you give me some reference point to use UV in identification of ruby? If you interested in some fotos - here they are. I posted it in my site. And i resized all of them for the forum...
I have no opinion regarding the gemstones in your images but I would like to point out that UV is not a tool for identificating gemstones and for sure not enhancements in rubies. Optical testing, specific gravity measurements and microscopic examinations are still the most common and efficient tools of the trade.
Checking for enhancements can mostly be performed with the aid of the microscope. In the case of rubies it is still the best tool available. There are also some more advanced instruments but commonly used only at really well equipped laboratories.
If you are unsure regarding your rubies I suggest you take them to a competent gemologist or laboratory for testing.
Conny Forsberg, thanks for reply. I just have interest in gemstones. I do it for myself. I am understand that microscope is the better way to examine gemstones. We have one microscope in production office. I will check earrings with them.

yes, one cannot get much obout a ruby stone by just shining it with UV. Many natural rubies (except the Thai and Cambodian ones) and synthetic rubies show fluorescence. If you wanna know whether your specimen is subject to treatments such as heat treatment, lead glass filling etc, a microscope, or at least a loupe is very helpful. All the best.
