Chrysos, please keep us informed as to how it goes. I for one find it interesting that you can walk along a stony beach and find emerlads....are they Cr bearing?

I noticed yesterday that I lent all of my better examples of norwegian emerald to my school (I conveniently lent my mineral collection to the school now when I'm going to university and have nowhere to display it), which is unfortunate as they keep all buildings closed during summer breaks. So photos will have to wait a few more weeks :| Nonetheless I would enjoy to see the ones Conny has got :)

No, its Vanadium mostly. Despite the sometimes really deep colour, it seems. I contributed with samples to a study conducted by some folks behind Geminterest a few years ago. I realize now those tests were probably in some way connected to this article:

641 : Gems & Gemology Vol XLIV summer 2008: Characterization of emeralds from a historical deposit: Byrud (Eidsvoll), Norway
RONDEAU B., Fritsch E., Peucat J.-J., Nordrum F.S., Groat L. --> Revue, Article, Anglais, 2008, page(s) 108-122
Edition: G.I.A.
ISSN 0016-626X

However, while I guess I was far from the inly one contributing with samples, the samples I sent them were very light green simple because I had not yet found any deeper green stones at that time. A risk with the above article is that they had too few deep green stones to test. But, of course, I shouldn't speak before reading it.

Sieving huge quantities of the sand could help to find the bigger pieces if they exist. Rather search in the placer aka sand than in the motherrock. As the place is near water, this should not be difficult.

Nikolaus Lackner, a Forum Member. is quite active in mining the Sedl placer in Habachtal/Austria for emeralds.... he might help with tips for basic equipment.

If you are reading Nikolaus I'd love to hear some tips for basic equipment.

Happy to join in!

I have to read a bit on the geology of the norwegian emerald occurance and will then propose a equipment setup. How many people will be working? (Need to know for the setup)

Could anyone provide Googlemaps Link or exact Coordinates so I can have a look at the area?

Is it OK with you to share the information about where this shore is located?

I succeeded to find some really old photos from my first tour to Byrud, I did it the lazy way and made a dropbox gallery instead of registering on imageshack: Here

A screen-shot from google earth is included describing the locations, with coordinates included.

As I said, these stones are only from the first trip, and the deep green ones are not included. If someone consider going there in the future, of course I will seriously consider joining :)

Hmm. My guess would be to search in the vegetation covered area about 5 meters above sea level or underwater.

Chrysos, I am seriously considering going on Sunday/Monday August 12/13 for about 24 hours. I live in California but will be in the UK for a week and can stay on for a day to fly up to Oslo. Your pictures add to the incentive.

Ok, that sounds like an opportunity! Unfortunately, I haven't got my driving licence yet, but if you would in some way get a car I could probably join you in Oslo (the bus from Gothenburg to Oslo is 20 bucks, so that's not a problem).

Perhaps, if you are really lucky, other people could join inas well. Maybe it's too far to go for Lennie for just a day? :?

Hi Chrysos, I would rent a car in Oslo at the airport and could pick you up at the bus station. I'll check possible flight times for me and get back to you. Others interested?

Chrysos I have only one sample which I aquired some 25-30 years ago. A small single crystal. Not much to study :) Also I have to go through bags and bags to find it as I have a lot of stuff bagged and tucked away. Some dug by myself and others bought and traded.

OK - so here's what I am thinking. I can fly in to Oslo Rygge at 11.20am Sunday 12th August. I can then pick you up in Oslo Chryos - and anyone else - at about 1300. Then drive to Byrud. We would have 3-4 hours at the mines on Sunday. Then we could have all day until the mines close on Monday and then I need to drive back to Rygge south of Oslo for my return flight on Monday evening.

PS: I have not looked into hotels yet for Sunday evening - but will do that soon.
