Greetings to all! So here's my(our) situation. After closing her ladies resale shop, my wife has asked me to help her set up an online store. We want to go the next step in vetting her gem inventory and any advice from this knowledgable group would be appreciated. For example, I wonder if it makes sense to spend the bucks on a Presidium Duo Tester or buy separate tools to perform thermal and refracting chores for gem identification? Perhaps other tools would be better investments for us at this point? BTW, She has some good gem books, a .00gm scale, a 10x loop and 20+ years experience in buying/selling jewelry.

Greetings DocZ and welcome to the forum. The Presidium tester is not a good choice. We've discussed this in detail on other threads.
I notice you live in the Bay Area. May I suggest you sign up for Starla Turner's Gemology Course through Alan Revere? http://www.revereacademy.com/classes/op ... -2-gem-id/ After a 3 Day Intensive, you will leave with the ability to positively identify gems and separate synthetic and imitation material. Yes, Starla is THAT GOOD!!!! She will teach you a systematic way to ID anything put in front of you, using standard gemological testing tools Polariscope Refractometer Spectroscope Microscope
She will also impart the wisdom to know when something is beyond your capabilities and you need to send it off to a lab for more sophisticated testing.
We've posted some of her tutorials in the Beginner's Section if you would like to check out her style.
