It would be nice to see a top view that shows the XTL shape.

Based on this picture alone it looks like the crystals might be hexagonally shaped so my guess is that someone is trying to make a piece of quartz look like it has some emeralds in it.

Yes, that is why I wanted to see the top view. Dyed Quartz XTLs embedded in calcite is a common way to simulate Emerald. Some go as far as mixing mica in Mica clusters for added effect. Many have been defrauded this way. Even way out in the bush in Emerald producing areas.

Hence all the reasons gemology by image is an assumption or very qualified, experienced guess. OP need more views?
