I'd love to see a picture of the stone those inclusions are in!

Different types of crystal in CC Garnet from Kenya. Two almost black and one transparent in between.

Awesome! Have you placed it in between crossed polars yet? Crystal inclusions in singly refractive materials often bring wicked images!

Ok folks, this thread was asleep for too much time, let’s give it a shake (all together…)

i’ve recently purchased some nice samples for my collection from a good friend of mine. Among them there’s a little cool TRANSPARENT Rhodonite which has interesting tubular curved inclusions resembling those you can find in some Winza rubies.

Image

Our tireless, “shameless travel addicted gemologist” Vincent Pardieu wrote a nice article about that

ciao

Hi Conny, thank you. Actually it was mined in Brazil as the sample in the Vincent's article.

Did someone say curved crystal inclusions? This peridot from Pakistan or Afghansitan (still not sure) has a whole bush of it!

Image

In his second photoatlas Koivula pictures a Pakistani peridot with straight dark brown to black needles which he has determined to be ludwigite-vonsenite. If that determination goes up for the curved crystals I don't know though.

Grabbing an unheated aussie sapphire and wacking it under the scope:

ey... hello there, little crystal inclusion...

Image

hmmm, it's sitting awfully close to the surface (take note that the facet edge is in focus as well), it may be a chip in that facet...

Needing oblique illumination...

Image

Ahhh you poor little bugger, you were cut in half by that big bad cutter, weren't you? (note the the lustre difference). But at least you aren't a chip! Haha... let's zoom in on you...

Image

Hmmm, what would you be? I know you heaven't been heated, you look intact (and i dug your host up myself and didn't bring it to the cooker). Let's change the lighting a bit...

Image

Look at you, you little strong fella, you cracked that sapphire! You must have expanded in volume a bit then, haven't you. That's ok, I do that myself as well nowadays...

So...
Squarish outline + Central Queensland sapphire + stress halo = zircon

Nice to meet you Mr. Zircon!

You live in a very nice blue sapphire if I may say so. My apologies for having you cut in half. Let me make up by making you look good...

Some day I'll have to have you take my picture and see if you can make me seem so glamorous, Tim! 8)
