Natural white topaz can contain very thin needles which show a flash of colorful iridescence. It is not easy to find a good one like this buff-top cushion. |

Just finished up this one tonight. It's a 2.10 ct tsavorite garnet from Kenya. Tsavorites are one of my favorite stones to cut, but difficult to photograph, the intense chrome type green never shows up in the pictures. |

Nice Aqua recut project. Had this one sitting around for over a year before I decided to tackle it. Stats: Start = 8.02ct - 15.3 x 12.6 x 7.6mm - a 49% depth ratio with a wide open culet and slightly off-center Final = 5.51ct - 13.1 x 11.4 x 7.4mm - a 65% depth ration with culet at 42* on the sides and 41* on the ends of the oval. Recovery = 69% It is possible I could have gone for a higher recovery, but the piece was already a little lob-sided anyway. So I chose better symmetry and less weight. Besides, am not entering a faceting contest with this Aqua. Well, maybe I am as I plan to sell it soon! I suspect how soon it sells will be the ultimate test. |

Got me a few cabochons today. What slowly dawned on me is they are all exactly the same size. What to do? Design competition for a bezel set pendant, and accepted designs get free pendants once made? haven't submitted a pic in a while, might be too big for forum regs (?) |

Some of you may have seen this Ruby before, as it was posted here two years ago. Over the weekend it sold and is in the hands of a top-flight gem collector in New Jersey. It's a funny thing having gems like this in one's possession. As much as I am pleased in making a nice sale, it was the type of gem that I found myself staring into, realizing how fortunate I am. Thanks to all of you who previously commented on this Ruby, much appreciated. *photo courtesy Jeffrey Hunt |

When I first started in gemology, a nice jeweler told me to be successful never fall in love with a gemstone. I think I would have had a hard time letting that ruby leave the house . |

Barbara, my early mentor, Sal Diliberto (a local guy to me here in Michigan, since retired to Florida) shared with me the same thought the year I met him (1981). Early on there weren't that many that 'spoke to me' that way. But after I started cutting my own goods, many a stone stayed longer than it should have! Of course having a wife who really appreciates fine gemstones probably encouraged our collector-kinda-thinking. I currently have a 6ct+ oval Merelani Mint Garnet that could have sold a couple of times, but we keep looking at it.... thinking.... and yeah, it's still here.Good to know I'm not alone |
