Dr. Hanneman, I'm embarrassed to say that as a collector of hundreds of gemstones I don't own a refractometer. Stone came from a respected mineral dealer in Italy.(hope its 1.81). Don't forget, I'm the guy that bought the rare red feldspar from the Congo.( not a gemologist or a rocket scientist).

A refractometer wouldn't have helped you with the Congo Red Andesine......standard gemological instruments could not separate it from natural. That's why so many Lab Reports indicated the material as natural with no indication of treatment.

I was just joking. I know a lot of experts were fooled. My buddy Joe(Amazon Imports) sent me a Tiffany ad( Wall St.Journal 9-19-05) with a 30k Andesine cocktail ring. Those customers at least got a nice mounting and diamond accents.
