When I just logged in I got a 'you have exceeded the maximal amount of log in attempts' message. Someone apparently has been trying to get into my account... has anybody else gotten this (which would mean a spambot is targetting the whole board) or am I the only one (which would mean some individual is trying to pull one on me?)

Not much you can do about it... when it manages to get through to some accounts you can pull out your old terminator suit from storage again

It appears that this is a new tactic employed by spam bots to gain access to phpBB boards, perhaps because the automated registration of new members is proving increasingly difficult when a phpBB board uses the standard anti-bot measures, like Q&A CAPTCHA, custom profile fields, forced approval of posts by newly registered users, etc. (GemologyOnline uses ALL of of these anti-spam measures.)

The good news: The bots were NOT able to break into our forum.

Make sure you use strong passwords using letters, numbers and special characters to make guessing your password next to impossible.

And... DO NOT USE A PASSWORD YOU USE FOR BANKING OR CREDIT CARDS. Really. Don't.

just received the message when i logged on today; and had to answer the question concerning ruby... although the bots haven't been successful, i've removed any personal info. :) received it on another forum, too, that used "captcha."

I am getting that I have tried to log in too many times every time I have tried to log in when in fact I had only tried to log in once.

There are a group of folks called "dictionary hackers" who will try to sign into forums, using a username and random words from the dictionary, as passwords, to try to get in.

Apparently you are in now, bruce_tourm. :D Hope you will continue to be able.

yes I am back in and making the rounds. It is nice to have everythiing remember again. Since I use the computer's memory I can stay focused on tourmaline. But now someone has grabbed my son's email address and is sending me rediculous messages. It never ends.
