An Evening On Benitoite California's Rare and Beautiful State Gemstone AND
Road trip to the Mine Camp
The extensive knowledge of our trio of speakers lends to a creative, insightful, and thorough coverage of the brilliant world of Benitoite. The lectures starts with the Geology and History of Benitoite then leads into the exploration/discovery of our state stone. The lectures continue with gemological aspects of this wonderous stone and how they relate to the final faceted gemstone. The evening covers the scientific, practical, and field knowledge that have been gleaned from our speakers years of working with Benitoite. It will be an evening that should leave you dreaming beautiful benitoite.
Come early, stones and specimens will be available for viewing and sale before and after the lecture. A video of the "Cash and Treasures" episode on Benitoite featuring Harry and Mary White will be showing during the cocktail hour.
The Speakers:
Rick Kennedy has been working with Benitoite for over 25 years, ever since he was a geology student at UC Santa Cruz. His company, Earth's Treasures was formed during those college years and was a part time business from 1986 until 2005 when he went full time. Earth's Treasures specializes in fine mineral specimens and rare gemstones and Rick specializes in rough and cut suites of crystalline minerals and faceted gemstones and currently has over 100 different species in his faceted gemstone collection (a selection will be set up at the meeting).
Harry and Mary White, G.G. have been rockhounds (individually and together) for 30 years, and like all rockhounds, have faced the dilemma - what do we do with all these rocks??? Harry had worked with wood, abalone shell and stone for years, and this evolved into his current work as a professional carver, faceter, and lapidarist. He teaches faceting at the San Francisco Gem and Mineral Society and facets for many jewelers and individuals. Mary became a gemologist because of her interest in science in general and the formation of gemstones. They found participation in the now-defunct "Cash and Treasures" show on the California State Gem Mine to be great fun, and hope that people will soon understand that benitoite is out there still to be found, as it is California's rare treasure.

$70 for the day to screen and dig through the mine tailings at the base camp. We cannot go to the mine. Mary says that there have been some decent stones come from the screenings and it's a fun day for us all.
According to the miners, there are NO, NONE,ZIP good hotels in Coalinga, just the one nice bed and breakfast. Stay by Interstate 5, only 10 miles away.
This website has all the details you need to know.
We will meet at the mine at 9am.

Do you have an alumni chapter in your area?
Have them arrange some affairs.
Speakers are only a phone call away....oh yeah, and we do pay for air fare and hotel accommodations. The money is generated from hosting the events.
Starla Turner and Suzanne Martinez , I must say, are the world's greatest planners and organizers. They've been doing it for 20+ years. But everyone has to start sometime.

A brand new chapter is starting here in the Twin Cities this month . I hope we can get some great presentations to come this way (they may not want to in the winter ).

I've often wondered why California chose benitoite as the official state gem when so few people can have it . Why not the beautiful tourmaline or some other gem found in California? The only benitoite I've been able to afford are specimens. What's that called? In sito??
