The Getty Villa in Malibu is a lovely place to visit, in and of itself, but right now there is a special exhibition that might interest some of you:
"Carvers and Collectors: The Lasting Allure of Ancient Gems"
Runs through September 7th, 2009.
Admission is free, but you need a reservation. Parking has gone up to $15. ASJH and WJA have already gone with special tours. This weekend several GIA Alumni Chapters are joining together to go.
I loved it. But I love museums with or without gemstones!

Thanks for that Blaire. The Malibu Getty is just a few miles away from me but I haven't been there since it re-opened. This exhibit features my two favorite things -- gems and antiquities -- so I'll definitely make reservations ASAP.
I'm especially interested in the technical aspects of early glyptic work. I hope some of that information is presented.
wow! i freaked out when i saw on cnn news that the getty center had to be evacuated today due to brush fire. i managed to get getty villa and getty center confused.

Both Gettys are located where they're at serious risk of fires. Considering how often the Malibu area is set ablaze, I'm actually a little surprised the Villa hasn't been damaged in the past. Not only does that area burn often but getting adequate firefighting equipment to it on the narrow Pacific Coast Highway and down the steep coastal canyons is very difficult. Very few such fires result from natural causes. Hot, dry weather -- especially when our Santa Ana Winds are blowing -- is a siren song to arsonists. Both terrible Malibu fires in recent years were set by pyromaniacs.

In a side room they have a short video of the carving done by a modern-day craftsman who uses ancient techniques. Also, these items are fairly small, but they have tables set up with a swing-arm viewer that you can focus over the item and it will appear giant-sized on a screen above the table. I loved getting to see them up close.
