Presents… RENÉE NEWMAN
RUBIES, SAPPHIRES & EMERALDS: THEN AND NOW
Noted author and fellow Graduate Gemologist, Renée Newman, presents an entertaining and educational update on the changes in the Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald realms.
Here are some of the highlights of her presentation:
-New geographic sources have emerged-others have been depleted
-The GIA Colored Stone clarity grading system is completely different than it was eight years ago!
-Treatments have proliferated and become more sophisticated
-New terminology has been developed to describe treatments
-Recommendations for disclosure statements have changed
-The effect of geographic origin on price has changed
Newman learned to appreciate fine gemstones when she directed tours to Asia and South America in the early 1980’s. Her passengers wanted details on how to evaluate the quality of the gems they were exposed to, so she signed up for the GIA Colored Stone Grading Course. She was so impressed with it that she decided to take the other courses required for gemologists. Newman noticed that the more information she gave her passengers, the more they were willing to spend on gems.
After receiving her G.G. diploma, she started working in a wholesale gem firm in downtown Los Angeles. Armed with trade experience and gemological credentials, Newman decided to create books that showed readers how to visually evaluate the quality of gems. Her first book, the Diamond Ring Buying Guide, was published in 1989. Since that time, she has written eight more books on gems and jewelry. Newman’s books are used worldwide as buying guides, sales-training tools, gemology course texts and references for jewelers, dealers and appraisers.
A new third edition of Newman’s Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald Buying Guide has just been released. Newman will share what she learned while doing research for this book and will present important information for selling and appraising rubies, sapphires and emeralds.

Just to recap on last evenings event.
It was an awesome evening.
Renee Newman's Powerpoint presentation was loaded with current information on colored gem treatments, sources and pricing information.
She spoke of the prevalence of lead glass filled ruby offered in the market with slides on detection.
She covered the status of international sources for colored gems, explaining how it relates to the pricing structure we are currently seeing. Example: she explained why Colombian emeralds are not commanding the premiums they once did (as there is NO shortage of fine Colombian material available in the marketplace) which is why few people are currently doing origin reports on emerald, but determining a sapphire originated in Kashmir can increase its value 100 fold!
She set up a small corner table offering several of the latest editions of her books. I bought the latest editions of the Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire Buying Guide and The Gemstone Buying Guidebecause all the information covered in her Powerpoint was also covered in the books!
I would highly recommend them as they are quite inexpensive and a great reference to have.
I would also recommend that if you ever have the opportunity to attend a Renee Newman lecture, GO!

Barbra, Can you tell me if the binding on the Gemstone Buying Guide is better on the 2nd Edition than it was on the First? Mine fell apart quite easily .

I really can't speak on that, as binding is not something I have a background in.
But you might want to find her email and ask.
I have her first volumes and have not had a problem with them. And, I tend to open books fully when I read them, often bending the pages backwards on the spine.

Maybe, its time for some new editions.
Yes, I'm sure it is . Of course, what I should have done with the first edition is what I do with so many of my softcover books: Take them to Kinko's-FedEx and have them spiral bound. Then they lay flat without concern for the spine .
