I've been living a few blocks from the "Messe Basel" for about one year, when I was in Basel; I'd like to see how's the city now... (nostalgic)
I remember the Weltmesse für Uhren und Schmuck: the works to prepare it, the crowd,...
Too bad (for me) it's about jewelry and watches only... I'm looking more for a Tucson-like exhibition. In Europe.

No, I haven't. I've only passed by the exhibition buildings to go to the university... But I remember many advertisement about watches... It was about 5 (probably 6) years ago. At that time I had little interest in gemology (that' not entirely true, but...). And absolutely no interest about watches! (I still have my 30 CHF quartz watch bought at a local electronics discount ).
Have you been there in the past editions? Are there many stones of uncommon gem materials or it is mostly jewelry?
Just curiosity, I'm not planning to go there. Maybe next year... I'm planning to go to Basel 'cos I'd like to close my old local bank account and I'd like to "catch two birds with one stone" going there when there's the Fasnacht or some interesting exhibition.
BTW let me and the forum know how's Basel2009 when you go.

I'm assuming that Basel is industry only? I'm wondering how strict they are in that regard as I would love to go, but would be going for myself. Not in the interest of the company I work for.
Just seems like a shame to miss it considering I'm living over here in Europe currently.

maialetto,
i've attended at the show in the last 5 years, it started as a watch show but became year after year more important about gemstones and jewelry. Since you know the place you surely remember the messeplatz, well, the building in front of the tram-line (google earth 47°33'47.22"N - 7°36'1.72"E) is completely dedicated to gemstones. even in other buildings (like this, for example 47°34'10.54"N - 7°35'56.79"E) you can find many stone dealer. Of course we are talking about faceted stones mainly.

Baselshow is one of the few fair i know which is open to the public aswell, it's not so cheap (30 CHF per day) but worth the visit.
since more than 20 years i visit Vicenza fair which, at that time was the most important fair of europe. In last years Baselshow became FAR more important.
sidenote: The basement floor of the 1st building i posted is completely dedicated to goldsmith/industry tools.
ciao

PS: both Gubelinlab and SSEF lab are present at the show and, both offers a service by a shuttle connection which allows you to have a gemstone report whithin 2 days.

From their website, Baselworld 2009 is open to the public, @ 60 CHF for one day (~50 bucks) or 150 CHF for the duration of the show. Nicht so preiswert...
Mmmmhh, next year I'll seriously think about going. Next months will be a mess here...
Wow yes that is expensive... for what it is. Sounds like Tucson this year, everything too expensive. This makes no sense to me: economy is bad so lets raise prices?
I think I'll skip this year but it's a shame I will be so close!

hi folks,
Back home since a couple of hours from Basel.
i was in charge by a magazine to do a fair report so talked with some people there and arranged to have more insights when the fair will be ended and a sort of summary will be possible.
once i've reset my mind a little i will release a "first shot" here.

Price.... same as for travel (anyone else got a wake-up call from booking EU flight recently ?) - who needs to go will go anyway and pay whatever (the entry fee is not much of the cost of attending, if there is business to be done, is it), but no more idle exploring crowd (for whom the tickets are a decision point).
