Rats! I know I won't be able to go . May I suggested the Red Roof Inn? It's just a few miles from the campus (south). That's where I stayed while taking the lab classes. Relatively cheap prices, good rooms. Have fun (and take notes!!).

Quite right MoDo...and I'm sure that "cameraman" would get the red carpet treatment at upcoming events...well, perhaps wrapped in a red carpet and thrown into the Pacific Ocean.

GIA does record these events. If you have the ability to visit the library in Carlsbad on a weekday, you can request to view videos. Last year I went in and watched a wonderful interview with John Sinkankas. It was recorded on the occasion of the transfer of the Synkankas library to GIA's Richard T. Liddicoat Gemological Library and Information Center. The only thing you really need is a lot of time. To condense an entire day into a synopsis printable here would be very difficult.
If you do have an interest, I suggest you call a few days ahead to give the library staff extra time to pull the things you would like to see or research. The library is a rare gem indeed!

I've just arrived in Carlsbad. The weather is ideal 65°. Th beach is full of surfers. I arrived so early (8:30am), it was a little inconvenient. I can only wander around the Discount Outlet Mall for a few hours before I get dizzy.
I'll keep you posted with tomorrow's Spinel events.
Sunday, I'm going to the Ocean View Mine Anyone been there already? I'm not sure of the hype....

Don't forget to eat at the Diner at the Mall (forgot the name. '50s decor.). Great food! The Marie Callender's has a good salad bar, and of course, wonderful pies! Mmmmm ... wish I was there!

Is anyone who went to this willing to write up a report of some of the highlights?
By looking at the list of presenters I realize that there was a vast amount of information presented so am not expecting a full report of any kind.
