Dear all,
Due to the holiday season the GIA's 41st Gemstone Gathering will be moved up and take place on

Tuesday 14th December 2010.

This month we are happy to welcome Dr. John Emmett who will present:

"Of beryllium and Beefsteak: Understanding Diffusion in Gemstones"

"The diffusion treatment of gemstones has been a fact of life for many years; as gemologists we think we comprehend it yet in reality there is very little true understanding of this process. John Emmett will explain things in simple terms and “if you can cook, you can understand what it is (and isn't), how it works, and what we might see in the future”. He will also discuss what types of gemstones may or may not be able to be diffused."

About Dr. Emmett:

John Emmett is a scientific consultant in high technology areas. Previously he was Associate Director for Program Development at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and prior to that was Associate Director for Lasers. As the director of the Laser Program for sixteen years, Dr. Emmett had responsibility for laser physics and engineering research for Inertial Confinement Fusion, Laser Isotope Separation, and Advanced Laser Development, including development and construction of the world’s then most powerful solid state laser system (NOVA).

Dr. Emmett is a co-founder of Crystal Chemistry, a small company devoted to the research and development of gemstone modification processes. Dr. Emmett holds several patents related to lasers and materials and has published numerous technical articles in the scientific literature. Dr. Emmett consults for GIA.

Dr. Emmett received his Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University and his B.S. in Physics from California Institute of Technology.

When Dr. Emmett was lecturing our GIA Alumni group locally, he touched on the "diamond coated cz" available on the market.
There is a tremendous amount of misrepresentation associated with the product and I was hoping you might specifically ask him if he ever published his findings and pictures.

The topic came up recently with a co-worker and I started looking for his report and could not find it anywhere.

Thanks.
