I haven't received mine yet. Most likely Tuesday. I'll let you know. I was so excited for a piece of equipment like this. It's really prefect for my needs. I hope the damage on yours was a fluke...

I did. But I've been at a trade show so I forgot to update. It didn't have scratches but it doesn't open all the way, like yours. It's really no more than I expected, really. I can't imagine that your replacement will open all the way either. It's the folding loupe model that Gem A chose that's the problem. They're going to send you one without a scratch. I think that's the best you can hope for. Sorry to sound so negative. It is, however, better than the one I made at home!
Note: Maybe many years ago Gem-A made a large production batch with that specific loupe model that was easily available at that time and they're still selling units from that production batch.

Hi Barbara. We're talking about a travel polariscope, but those ebay links were for linen loupes just to illustrate that there are better loupes out there to use as a base for the end product. (Which would be a polariscope). I used my new gemA polariscope during Vegas this past week and it was exactly what it should have been. I didn't buy the light source to accompany it because there are SO many appropriate light sources around.
the gem-a foldable polariscope is very small when folded, and still big enough when unfolded so to allow use of a conoscope on top of your stone. Nice to see that they finally decided to make a light source that actually fits it (the previous light source had a curved surface which was making it very impratical)
Otherwise, someone in the forum had suggested combined use of polaroid sunglasses and a flashlight which glass top has been replaced by a piece of polaroid filter.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/10x-Folding-Lin ... 3a81abcf83 DavinciQc, this linen tester is to small to be used as a travel polariscope but its a very good magnifying device, this is the 10X DELUX linen tester its made in india and its one of my favorite magnifiers, for a travel polariscope look for some thing larger.

If you really feel like you want to make your own, see my earlier thread where I, sort of, documented the process. In the end, I bought one!! But maybe a smarter, more resourceful person could have done better. See: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=16452
