A year or so ago I ordered the JVC JBar Appraisal course from the JVC, $89.95. I had some spinal surgery and then my wife divorced me and kind of forgot all about having it. I finally read the study material, took the test, and mailed it in. I passed ! Now, I was at least hoping for something to hang on the wall next to all my GIA certs and diplomas so people would know I had passed the JVC / JBAR course, but no such luck. All I got was an offer to spend a lot more money with JVC to be listed in their book. This is fine, but how does one instill potential customers with the knowledge that one has worked hard to be educated and ethical in the trade. I know some may feel this is a pedantic rant, but I know people who look for certifications from reputable institutions and organizations as it gives them confidence when dealing with a person or store.
I know the JVC JBAR course doesn’t make me an appraiser, I do need to learn so much more. But unfortunately, in St. Louis Missouri, there are not many places to take courses on this. You actually wouldn’t believe the lack of real training one can find on anything to do with jewelry in St. Louis. If anyone knows of some, please let me know.
Most of the time you need to travel to where they are holding classes.
Yes it cost money LOTS OF MONEY!!! LOL
money for the course
money for the travel
money for the hotel rooms
money for meals
so it is not easy or cheap to become a good qualified appraiser but in the long run it will pay off for you. It just takes time and a comittment from you to see it through.
All I can say is, "GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!"
Later
Take Care and Have Fun

Actually, I have looked into taking this course (that LaShawn had listed):
Master Valuer – Anna Miller’s course
http://www.mastervaluer.com/
There is no travel involved as you can do it at home, you are assigned your own tutor, you have one year to complete the course, and it's not overly expensive (compared to the other appraisal courses). I have all of Anna Miller's books, and those are the text books that the course uses.
And when you complete the course, you receive your R.M.V.P. certification.

Thank you one and all for the good information.
I have actually wrote to the ASA and was told they don’t actually have any courses , but there are ASA approved courses and classes.
I also wrote the ISA and was told they are not an education organization.
The other ones I haven’t tried yet, but I will do.

Ms. Moderator. Have you signed up for the Anna Miller course? What do you think of it? Her books are great.
LOL Ms. Site Administrator!
I am currently finishing up my A.J.P. with GIA, then I have to study for my certification test with my employer, and then I will sign up for the Anna Miller course.
I've been working so much lately that I feel fortunate if I get time to sleep - let alone study
