I have a 1,25 Ct Alexandrite from Ceylon. I bought it for a reasonable price, since the native cut leads to a light leak. One of the flattest cuts I have ever seen by the way.
The Material is actually not bad, inclusions are there but not very prominent. Color Change is O.K. for Sri Lankan Alexandrite.
My Question is: How much should I take off in Price compared to a Perfectly cut stone of same size and material?
Or should I calculate by considering the yield of a recut?

Let me just toss out an idea here. I'm a cut fanatic and think it's a very important consideration in any stone purchase. But are alex's prized for their brilliance or the quality of their color change?
If the color change is very good and the windowing isn't overly distracting, it seems to me a shame to sacrifice face-up size for more brilliance, especially if recutting would reduce the size a lot. Alex is so rare and valuable this may be one of those situations where the standard rules don't apply. They certainly don't for emeralds and some other high value gems.
This is all theoretical without seeing the stone but I'm interested in the group's thoughts.

I did put in the Alex into Ebay for a starting price of 299,- Euros. I just wanted to test out if there would be bids on this level ... there is, and the Auction is still going on for 6 more days. The price is what the market stands, a sentence my father used to teach me over and over.
Well there were severeal bargainhunters contacting me and one already placed a bid.
I tried to calculate by considering the yield of a recut.
I found out that a facet recut would yield a stone smaller than 0,70 ct, but since I am not an expert in cutting, this may go up or down for another 0,10 ct or so.
Second consideration: Recut as a flat but nice and gemmy Cabochon (Look at the face down Pictures-the color quality and Crystal are both there)
Here the Stone would stay over the magic 1 Ct mark.
I know, the description is in German but I already gave all the informations in the description above.
If anyone is interested in this little Alex, for recut or gemmological purposes, here below is the link to the auction.
